Katy ISD board approves plan to buy U of H Cinco Ranch satellite campus

December 12, 2017

On Dec. 12, the district's board of trustees officially ratified the motion to spend $6.7 million to buy the 10-acre plot of the University of Houston's Cinco Ranch branch at 4242 S. Mason.

Katy ISD officials moved the 800 Creech Elementary students to the former college campus after Hurricane Harvey left floodwaters 2 to 4 feet deep inside the school at 5905 S. Mason. All the books in the library and most of the contents in the classrooms were lost.

The district had been leasing the campus from the University of Houston while repairs were underway.

"I'm very excited that we're getting this done," said Katy ISD trustee Bill Lacy. "There were a lot of people who were eyeing that property."

Katy ISD officials said they haven't formalized plans for their new property.

"We've got several options out there. We've got some programs we can look at," said Katy ISD Superintendent Lance Hindt. "We're not ready to commit on that right now. We'll bring it back to the board."

In 2016, University of Houston officials approved plans to sell the Cinco Ranch site that opened in 1989. Katy ISD had been occupying the property under a temporary lease that allowed them to make structural changes as needed for its elementary school-age students.

The school board were enthusiastic about the plan to buy the former college branch.

"I still think this is probably the single best real estate deal made in the history of this district. It's just a tremendous deal," said Katy ISD trustee George Scott.

The Creech Elementary students are expected to remain in the former college building for the rest of the school year. By that time, the repairs to the main school campus are expected to have been completed, officials said.

"It has served us very well," said Katy ISD trustee Rebecca Fox.
